Beachbody DVD Workout Programs for Kids!

by admin on October 7, 2013

Kids exercisingWith the childhood obesity epidemic  on the rise in the U.S., it is now even more important than ever that parents begin to teach their children the importance of exercise and eating right.  Beachbody’s workout programs for kids are a great tool for parents to help keep their kids active, healthy, and fit.  With all of the electronic media, from TV to video and computer games, to non-existent physical education programs in schools, children of this generation are far less active than kids of previous generations.  (Okay, don’t get me started on all the junk food options that kids have available today!)  I lived in a generation where I played outside all day long in the summer months and even after school on many days, and took P.E. from grade school through high school.  Now I realize that not all kids who eat an unhealthy diet and are sedentary are overweight or obese; however, a poor diet and lack of exercise are not the building blocks for good health.  Here are some sobering statistics from the CDC’s website (www.cdc.gov) concerning childhood obesity:

  • Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years.
  • The percentage of children aged 6-11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2010.  Similarly, the percentage of adolescents aged 12-19 years who were obese increased from 5% to 18% over the same period.
  • In 2010, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese.
  • Overweight is defined as having excess body weight for a particular height from fat, muscle, bone, water, or a combination of these factors.  Obesity is defined as having excess body fat.
  • Overweight and obesity are the result of “caloric imbalance”–too few calories expended for the amount of calories consumed–and are affected by various genetic, behavioral, and environmental factors.

Beachbody Has DVD Exercise Workout Programs for Kids!

Beachbody offers three workouts geared for kids:  Tony & the Kids!, Shaun T’s Fit Kids Club, and Get Real with Shaun T.

Tony & the Kids1Tony & the Kids:  This workout features celebrity trainer Tony Horton and special guest Judi Williams.  You know, the guy who created P90X and made it a household word?!  (Tony Horton has also created the following workouts:  10 Minute Trainer, Power 90, P90X One-on-One, Power Half Hour, Tony and the Folks!, and Ho Ala ke Kino.)  Tony &  the Kids has a workout time of 32:00 minutes and a total running time of 41:42 minutes and is recommended for kids age 5 to 12 (and parents who want to act like kids).  Here is a description from the DVD jacket:

At the request of parents who have transformed their bodies with Beachbody trainer Tony Horton’s popular Power 90 and Power Half Hour fitness programs, we created “Tony & the Kids!”  This program will get your kids laughing stretching, and moving.  It’s the perfect way to instill a healthy habit of exercise.  Just because it’s exercise doesn’t mean it’s not filled with the same kind of silly “Tonyisms” that make all of his routines entertaining.  You’ve gotta see it to believe what he and Judi have come up with:  “Wild Horsie Ride”, “The Tony Shuffle”, “Wacky Jacks”, “Ride the Wave” and more.  This program was created for kids, but we know parents will want to sneak this routine into their fitness regimen for the pure fun of it.  Plus bonus:  In “Tony’s Chat with the Kids!” Tony discusses good health habits like eating right, making healthy choices, and staying active.

I personally really enjoyed this workout!  A lot of the moves I recognized from my P90X workout.  I tried to get my son to do this workout when he was eight.  He did it a few times with me, but he didn’t really care for it, deeming it “babyish”, thanks in part to his older sister who informs him of such things!  So I’m not sure about the age recommendation on this video (ages 5 to 12).  I guess it would depend upon the child.  Clearly,  since I enjoyed this video I must be one of the parents who want to act like a kid!  I would definitely recommend this video!

Shaun T's Fit Kids ClubShaun T’s Fit Kids Club:  This workout program features another of Beachbody’s amazing celebrity trainers, Shaun T.  Shaun T. is also the creative genius behind the following workouts:  Hip Hop Abs, Rockin’ Body, Shaun T’s Dance Party, Get Real with Shaun T, INSANITY, INSANITY:  The Asylum Volume 2, and Focus T25.  Shaun T’s Fit Kids Club has a total workout time of 50 minutes, featuring two 25 minute segments:  Cool Moves and Grove It Out.  This workout it recommended for kids ages 7+.  Here is a description from the DVD jacket:

Want to be part of the Fit Kids Club?  Get down and get healthy with Shaun T!  This isn’t some boring old gym class–it’s mad awesome dance moves that will leave you smiling, happy, and healthy!  It doesn’t matter what your size or shape is, or even if you can’t dance.  Learn some crazy cool steps set to rad music and you’ll be rockin’ in no time!

Cool Moves:  Shaun T shows you new hip, hot steps like “The Hey!, “Snake It”, “Pound & Hop”, “Dust & Wave”, and “Smooth Groove”.  Learn the coolest moves and get in great shape at the same time!

Groove It Out:  Work it out with the Fit Kids, and get your groove on with steps like the “Hustle”, “We’re Cool”, “Body Jam”, “Wind & Toss”, “Bounce & Swipe”, and “Basketball”.  You’ll be having so much fun, you’ll forget you’re exercising!

This workout program also comes with 3 Free Bonuses:  healthy kid-friendly snack ideas, a guide to reading nutritional labels, Shaun T Fit Kids Club wall poster to help keep track of your workouts!  (Note:  We have owned this video for quite some time and our copy did not come with free bonuses!)

I would have to say that my son enjoyed this workout a little more than Tony & the Kids! probably because the children featured in the video were a little bit older.  Anyway, he didn’t deem it “babyish”!  LOL!  Again, I would highly recommend this video.

Get Real with Shaun TGet Real with Shaun T:  Cardio & Strength:  This workout program also by Shaun T (see above in Fit Kids Club description) features two healthy workouts:  Cardio & Strength and is recommended for ages 9+.  Here is a description of Get Real with Shaun T from the DVD jacket:

Get Moving!  Looking for a fun way to get in shape?  Here it is!  It’s time to “Get Real” with fitness expert Shaun T.  Shaun’s designed two HEALTHY and ENERGIZING routines for kids of all shapes and sizes.  You don’t need any equipment–all you have to do is take your “Get Real” DVD and Push Play.  You’ll be healthier and stronger in no time!

Cardio – Get your body moving with this nonstop fast and fun workout!  After a quick warm-up, you’ll be moving, sweating, and burning calories.  It’s the perfect way to help you lost weight or get in shape.  Plus, there are plenty of variations for all fitness levels, and there’s great music, too.  You’ll be surprised to discover that working up a sweat can be so much fun!

Strength – This strength and conditioning workout creates strong muscles and a leaner, healthier body.  Improve your strength, speed, balance, and agility with these easy-to-follow moves.  With options for all fitness levels, you can move to the advanced levels as your strength and fitness improve.

Get Real with Shaun T also comes with a workout calendar, healthy snack suggestions, and a guide to reading labels.  This is my favorite workout of the three, probably because it’s the workout I can get my son to do.  I guess he likes to feel like he’s not doing something babyish!  Wink

I would like to add that depending upon your child (their age and other factors, obviously!) they might be capable of accomplishing one of Beachbody’s workout programs for adults.  When my daughter was 13, she started doing P90X with me!  It all depends on your child and I would suggest getting input from your pediatrician if you’re considering having your child do a “grown ups” workout routine.  Overall, younger kids will be happy with the above workout programs for kids!
